The Greatest Want of the World

Hello everyone,

Man this week flew by. I just realized I have not blogged since Tuesday and I thought I had better update. :-) I still need to get a post out on the great things that happened at camp, but please allow me to share this with you. This ends an audio story we have and this time I took it down. It is well worth any young man's time to read. This is our goal.

The greatest want in the world is the want of men.
Men who will not be bought or sold
Men who in their inmost souls are true and honest.
Men who do not fear to call sin by its right name.
Men who's conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the pole.
Men who will stand for the right though the heavens fall.

May we be those men.

The Blogging Boy Scout,
Travis

Hi! This blog came up when I tried to find the quote that you quoted. Do you know to whom I can give credit for this quote? I used to have it taped to my refrigerator for the longest time and now want it up again as a good compass for raising my boy!

Please, if you know who originally wrote those words, I would appreciate knowing--you can e-mail me at mrsw007@aol.com. Thanks! Lori Ann Wilkinson

I think you'll find the posting at www.fromwhereistand.info also builds on this theme and is worth looking over.

The quotation originates from Ellen G White the American Seventh Day adventist Preacher

Anonymous is correct, however Ellen White was into plagiarism. She may have lifted that statement from one of her contemporaries. She wrote many volumes and is held in esteem by SDAs as their prophet. After a careful study, I have concluded she is just another false prophet that emerged in the 19th Century.

The quote is in the book Education, pp. 56,57, by Ellen G. White. After a careful study, I have found her writings a true blessing for Christians. Guess our studies lead us to different conclusions Robert!

That is for sure. She had some truth mixed with the false. If we are foolish enough to take the time to read her writings, we still have to go to other sources, mainly scripture, to check accuracy.

Name us some of her hundreds of prophetic visions that have come true. Someone on a forum I write on found one, but refuses to pinpoint where it is written.

Where has she been a help to the SDA Church? Oh, you say, on health. Well, I don't see any SDA doctors using water remedies so popular during Kellogg's era. In fact was it even Ellen who the water revelation was given to? She took her sons to a Phrenologist to get their heads measured and got a good report. How many phrenologists are now practicing. She did "borrow" from a Dr. Sylvester Graham, the graham cracker inventor, but most of his "inspiration" has been discarded. then there was the book she wrote called "An appeal to Mothers". It went over big time. the brethren were so embarrassed about that one that it soon faded into history.

So Anonymous, tell us just how you are being blessed by an author that plagiarizes, Writes things she has no idea about and takes history and tries to make it coincide with her teaching. An example is the story of the Waldenses and their Sabbath "keeping". Dr. Samuele Bachiocci even admitted she was wrong about them being Sabbath observers.

Please visit the Ellen G White estate. on whiteestate . org

Then searc for an article titled "EGW and her critics"

There, every charge that has ever been laid against her is answered for.

After reading alot of sites that spoke badly of her, that article cleares alot of misconceptions up.

Do this only if you are seeking for truth.

God bless you in your quest for truth.

I so enjoyed this blog. I love it when we are stirred and challenged in our thinking. It is through this that we make a search for our truth. Good for all of you that seek to know more, research and dig deep! And thank you young man for having this web page that so easily gave me the quote I have been searching for to place on my facebook page! Blessings to all, Dora.

This guy Robert is really interesting. "She may have lifted that statement from one of her contemporaries." Wide, careless speculation without any effort to provide evidence.

So "may" is now wide careless speculation. In light of all the plagarism ellen did the "may" may not be at all out of line.
Now concerning going to the White estate for the answers to the charges, I have only to equate that to going to Charley Manson for the truth to all the murders he or his cult commited. The real truth is found by the investigators.

In the case of ellen there is abundant investigation to prove she was a false prophet and the SDA Church is really cultic.

This is Robert writing. I used the name "anonymous" in the previous post because I am on a friend's computer and do not have my password. Hope it is not too confusing.

When we try to make public statements that demand person's integrity, let's try to provide enough evidences whether for or against. Robert, just find time to study her books and compare scripture. Keep on doing that...The result of her counsel has maintained the SDA church a protestant other than Catholic or Charismatic.

Take time to read the preface of books, as well as any comments an author or editor might write that is not in the actual chapters.

Doing so would have saved many hurt feelings in the history of the discussion about plagerism and E. G. White. She is open about freely using other writers when they clearly write about what she wishes to convey. This was commonly done in her day without giving detailed credit as we do today. Christ and Biblical authors did as well!

I applaud you, Robert for searching the scriptures for Truth. Ellen said that if more did that there would be no need for her writings.

so where did the comment originate?
I find this blog interesting - I am an SdA - struggling w/EGW at the present time -
the truth is this - 90% of what SdA believe hinge on 1 main teaching/revelation from Mrs. White -
so as one searches thru her writings, the teachings of the SdA church and the Bible - we (SdA) better hope all she said lines up 100% with Scripture or the SdA church falls apart - God bless you all in your study and search -

An attorney who who's specialty is copyright law (a catholic) took the time to research this idea that EG White copied other sources. This investigation was prompted by naysayers wanting proof. His finding was that in all of the vast writing...most of which are still unpublished...less than 2% could even be possibly identified as possibly copied. Of that 2% most of it was just a case of similar wording but was painting an entirely unique picture or idea. His conclusion...? Same as mine. There are terribly misinformed people claiming to be christians doing nothing but name calling and rehearsing the same accusations. Criticism and judgment is called sin by the bible...evil surmising is what is called. And isn't sin why were in the mess were in? As an evangelist/revivalist I'm amazed at how often I hear other preachers saying almost the identical things I've penned in one of my messages. If I didn't know better id swear they stole my material. I hear pastors preaching near identical messages...the point is simply that there are only so many ways to say the same thing, and there is going to be similar thoughts and ideas coming from all corners of the world.

The Desire of Ages Project, The Conclusions of Fred Veltman, Ph.D., from Ministry, Dec 1990. Excerpted quotes: "The content of DA is for the most part derived rather than original." "Ellen White used a minimum of 23 sources, including fiction." "Ellen White's literary assistants, particularly Marian Davis, are responsible for the published form of DA." Veltman's team, over seven years of research, concluded average of 85% was plagerized, only 1% original to her.

The complete report is found at: http://docs.adventistarchives.org/documents.asp?CatID=13&SortBy=1&ShowDateOrder=True.

I have perused several mid-to-late 1800s tomes, all of which included source cites. There is so much evidence available to prove that EGW wrote almost nothing (excepting of course, her letters) that originated from her. Fact: She never had visions; as a result of her head injury she suffered from Partial Complex Seizures, a form of epilepsy. Fact: She claims many times to have been visited by "beings of light" which she claims were angels. Twice she mentions visits from James White years after he died. "On the night of July 9, 1896, I had a beautiful dream. My husband, James White, was by my side. ..." Life Sketches, 1915, 360. "In the night I dreamed I was in the carriage, driving, sitting at the right hand. Father was in the carriage, seated at my left hand." Letter 17, 1881, 2. "Visits by angels" is a symptom typical of those with injuries such as she suffered from.

Uriah Smith, from whom EGW got many of the things she was "shown," states at page 219 of his Daniel and the Revelation, regarding Revelation 5:13, "In this instance the time is anticipated when redemption is finished." Smith is commenting on Scripture written byt the Apostle John late in the first century A.D. This is one of the foundations of the "Investigative Judgment" doctrine held by the SdA secular social club "religious organization," namely that Christ's work was not finished at the cross.

Was Christ’s work finished at the Cross? Ellen White says “No.” Uriah Smith says “Christ’s blood did not make an atonement.” On the word of four witnesses in Scripture, three of those witnesses being Christ's own words, Christ said His work was finished. Are we to believe Ellen White and Uriah Smith? Or are we to believe Christ at His word?

Ellen White says Christ’s work not finished: Repeatedly, she says the "work" of the "investigative judgment" is in progress in heaven.
“Christ's work in behalf of man is not finished. It continues today.” Counsels for the Church, 308,4; Counsels on Health, 499,2. (In this Manuscript, published in a compilation, she contradicts herself: "Christ came to the earth to present a true and exalted standard. Brief as was the period of His public ministry, He accomplished the work He came to do. How impressive were the truths He taught, how complete His lifework! ... Christ's work in behalf of mankind is not finished. It continues today." This Day With God, 283,2&5 from Manuscript 79, Oct. 1, 1906. Either He accomplished, finished, His work or He did not.

Uriah Smith on Christ’s atonement: "Christ did not make the atonement when He shed His blood upon the cross. Let this fact be fixed forever in the mind." Uriah Smith, Looking Unto Jesus, 237.

Jesus' Own Words as His True Witness: "Yeshua said to them, 'My personal food is that I do the will of him who has sent me and finish His work.'" John 4:34. "But my testimony [which is borne] to me is greater than Yohannan's, for the works that my Father gave me to finish, those works which I have done testify for me that The Father has sent Me." John 5:36. "I have glorified you in the earth; I have accomplished the work that you have given me to do." John 17:4. The Original Aramaic NT in Plain English, Bauscher

Witness to Jesus' statement on the cross: "When he took the vinegar, Yeshua said, 'Behold, it is finished.' And he bowed his head and gave up his spirit." John 19:30. The Original Aramaic NT in Plain English, Bauscher

"During the discourse, I said that I did not claim to be a prophetess. Some were surprised at this statement, and as much is being said in regard to it, I will make an explanation. Others have called me a prophetess, but I have never assumed that title. I have not felt that it was my duty thus to designate myself. Those who boldly assume that they are prophets in this our day are often a reproach to the cause of Christ. "My work includes much more than this name signifies. I regard myself as a messenger, entrusted by the Lord with messages for His people" (Letter 55, 1905; quoted in Selected Messages, book 1, pp. 35, 36); emphasis added.

That is a telling claim, for only Christ was more than a prophet, and only His work signified more than that of a prophet.

And John the Baptist. Christ said John the Baptist was more than a prophet. Matt 11:9-10 Jesus described his cousin John as more than a prophet...he was a messenger. I think you will find that Ellen in two separate quotes described herself as a messenger and that her work involves so much more than a prophet. I can't say she was bestowing the honour of John the Baptist onto herself, but it sounds too similar for comfort...unless it's true. But how could it be true of someone who re-defined Hebrews 1. She stated ...has in these last days spoken through the testimonies of his spirit. Scripture on the other hand states in these last days has spoken to us by his son. In the Ellen White database there are over 100 references to testimonies of his spirit. After reading them it is quite apparent that she euphemistically referred to her own work as the testimonies of his spirit. In my opinion this is a case of self promotion and usurping Christ. Can she really be a prophet...? Fear God keep His mitzvah this is the whole duty of man. Shalom.
